The kids and I just returned home from watching Jeff run the fire department’s burning down of a building that they’d been using all week for fire drills & training. It was such a great photo-op even with my little digital Canon Powershot. Once it was over, they mopped up and the kids and I went for ice cream.

This brings back memories. I grew up in a town of 2,600 people with a volunteer fire department that would burn down houses rather than bulldoze them. Everyone would bring their lawn chairs and visit while they watched.
wow… that's the first time I've seen a fire purposely created. great photo-op!
My friend from college was engaged to a firefighter. We were in a photography studio together and she always photographed these drills. She converted them to black and white and increased the contrast; they were amazing! Instant emotion and drama. Lovely post.
Oh my!!! What amazing photos!

Great photos, wish I was there.
It looks like it was a lot fun. Certainly not your typical day.
Wow, did your house smell like smoke?
Great photos! We've watched a couple of training burns, too, but never that close. And (it seems) always in the dead of winter. Shiver!
Great photos! That must have been amazing to watch. After that, ice cream sounds just perfect!
How adorable that your husband and your children look exactly the same in profile! The picture where they are all standing together.
What a fun thing for your kiddos! My husband's a firefighter too. I just discovered your blog from Julie of Joy's Hope, and am really loving it!
Hi Cathe
Neat pics. I was driving by there this am and watched for a while from the thrift store parking lot.
We just finished filming the 1st episode of Eco Beeps and posted it on the blog. Check it out.
Best,
Charlie
I survived a housefire & as a result…my dad became a volunteer. It's so impressive to watch them work during a drill like this. Great photos!
What an awesome experience for your children to watch their father training to save lives and property!
I didn't know your hubby is a firefighter. Is Petaluma's FD a volunteer service, or is he a pro?
My husband missed a meeting once and they elected him assistant chief since he couldn't say no.

Hi Maria-
Petaluma is all paid firefighters. Jeff was volunteer in the beginning of his career, but paid now for about 24 years.
That's pretty funny about your husband! Gotta love those volunteer firemen!! We live out in rural Petaluma, so it would be all volunteer ff's if we should have an emergency. God bless ’em!
My mom just showed me your site and I noticed that you too were a firefighter's wife! I love your site and your ideas! You do a great job.
