Ever been to a spelling bee? I hadn’t. But my daughter Sarah, and her friend Bridger won their school spelling bee and were sent on to the regional bee, which was last night.
What a fun experience for everyone! It’s pretty slow-goin’ for the first hour or so with 50 kids competing, but it picked up momentum as some kids started dropping out and got down right exciting.
We are so proud that Sarah took 3rd place and her friend Bridger took 4th! The top 5 go on to the district spelling bee on March 30.
I know I don’t share a lot of family photos or videos, but Sarah loves being mentioned on my blog, so how could I resist showing off our special moment? (Sorry about the bumpy video, don’t get motion sickness!)
The word that got her:
chortle n. A snorting, joyful laugh or chuckle. To utter a chortle or express with a chortle.
Congratulations Sarah!! We are so proud!

Congratulations Sarah! Chortle is a tricky word (and sounds funny too)
Congratulations Sarah! I’m so proud of you. I’ve never even heard of that word chortle. I can’t wait to see you compete at the Regionals.

Congrats!!! Way to go Sarah & Bridger!! Good luck on March 30th
That is so impresseive. I thought about misspelling this entire comment, but I just couldn’t do it! :0P
Yay girls!!!
Congrats Sarah and Bridger! Spelling bee kids are the coolest in the world. Chortle is one of my favorite words…it’s up there with dungarees, hankering and druthers. My love of words started at the coffee table listening to my grandma and hasn’t ended yet. Please post the results of the subsequent bees-I’m totally excited for both of them.
Way to go girls! I loved spelling and it is something to follows you through life. Good luck at the next competition.
Good work, Sarah!
Congratulations to both Sarah and Bridger! I thoroughly enjoyed the movie Spellbound. Good luck in the upcoming competition. Let us know the outcome.
PS love the bee graphic at the top of this post!

Congratulations to your daughter! That’s awesome.
I love your blog, so I’ve given you an award. Come to my blog and check out the 3rd entry.
Congratulations to your daughter…way to go, Sarah!
I can still remember it…I went to our county spelling bee (with the cutest 7th grade boy in our class.) I got knocked out on the word “dawdle” (which I spelled “doddle”). I’ll never forget it.
CONGRATS!! I love that word. So glad to have a word to describe my little snorts now!!!
I have a sad spelling bee story to tell. Granddaughter, Daisy, placed 3rd last year in her school. She was studying really hard for the bee this year and was doing great…a word came “capital” like the capital of a state and she spelled it “capitol” because her Dad was helping her practice and told her that was right without checking. She was so sad and her Dad was very, very sad! She will be in 6th grade next year, and I am sure will do great. She cried off and on for the rest of the day…but she’s a trooper. Good luck in the next leg.
Congratulations you two! I love a good spelling bee
& Good luck!
