Writing – Journal Cigar Box
by Jennifer Farquhar
I’ve always enjoyed writing but when it came to keeping a baby book on my girls I failed miserably. I remember as a kid looking at my older brother, Tim’s baby book filled out so nicely. When I looked at my big sister, Shelly’s baby book it had a few details written in. But no matter how hard I looked there was no baby book for me or my baby sister, Cathe. What happened?
When you have your own baby you soon find out what happens! You can document in your prettiest handwriting the baby’s first sneeze and hiccup or you can sleep.
I have kept a journal most of my life and just couldn’t NOT write about the fun things my little darlings said, got in to, caused, or created. The journal cigar box was born.
I picked up the cigar box at a local humidor because I thought it was pretty not to mention free. I sat it on my night stand next to my bed and filled it with little snippets of memories. Regardless of where I was or what writing resources I had I would write about whatever my little girls did.
In my cigar box are dated entries on paper coasters, napkins, torn box tops, scratch paper and receipts. Here are some of my favorites:
Editor’s note: In case you didn’t figure it out, Jennifer is my beloved big sister and best friend that is missed dearly. Thank you for reading her story.

I love the story and I think this is such a great idea!
I might just have to pull out my cigar box find and do this too!
Yay for siblings and cigar boxes filled with priceless memories!
Thanks for sharing as I often get so hung up on aesthetics that I miss out. Yeah, I’m the mom that makes you blow your candles out twice if I don’t get just the right scrapbook pic! Tsk tsk! (I only did it once though…)
Nice….
So sweet. And now I actually feel good about the little scraps of memories that I’m collecting because I have not made the time to formalize them.
Now I’m convinced that it’s much more chic to do it our way! ; )
It is so great to save all those memories (they are the truly valuable items to put in a scrapbook) Pair them up with a few time relevant photos and you have a keepsake of unquantifiable worth. I tell all my clients to write these type of stories down on anything they can get their hands on; Many a note written on an envelope has been scanned and put in scrapbooks.
Thanks for sharing.
This is so weird! I first started looking at your blog when I saw it on the craft forum on craigslist. I think you are so talented and I love the wide range of things you do.
So a couple months back I saw the pictures of your sisters store and saw that they were in Springfield and thats where I live. (I am still needing to go check that out) But just now I was reading this post and saw the names and I actually went to middle school with Stephanie! (and again in college) What a small world!
Continue to do what you do as long as you are able. You are so good at it.
